VOLUNTEER WITH HVFD!

Volunteering as an EMT/Firefighter is an incredibly gratifying and rewarding experience.  It's an opportunity to serve your community and provide lifesaving services to those in need.  Have you ever thought about volunteering?   Have you ever wondered what it would take or what the experience would be like? Below is an overview of the process to become a volunteer EMT/firefighter.  Please read all the way through and evaluate if the opportunity is right for you.

BECOMING AN HVFD MEMBER:
Step 1: Email us at hillandalefiredepartment@gmail.com with your name and contact information.
* Step 2:  An application will be emailed to you.
* Step 3:  A member of HVFD will contact you after reviewing the application to set up an interview.
* Step 4:  Post application/interview, you will be asked to attend a monthly business meeting to introduce yourself to the membership at which time the membership will consider you for probationary membership.

YOUR FIRST YEAR AS A VOLUNTEER:
The first year is a serious time commitment.  Upon being accepted as a probationary member, you'll be enrolled in the following courses:

*VBOC (Volunteer Basic Orientation Class)
*EMT (Emergency Medical Technician Class)

Classes typically meet 1 weekday evening and 1 weekend day per week.  In addition to class, it is also expected that you ride as an observer on the ambulance once per week to practice the skills you learn in class and to learn on the job.  You should expect to spend two evenings and one weekend day per week at the fire station for the first year.

Once you complete EMT Class, you'll begin running calls under the supervision of a preceptor.  Upon completion of all your calls, you will have to pass a written, oral, and practical exam at which time, you'll become a charge EMT!  From application to becoming a charge EMT of an ambulance is typically an 18 month commitment.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:
After becoming a Charge EMT, the learning and training doesn't stop.  You can remain a Charge EMT or decide to pursue additional opportunities including:

* Ambulance Driver
* Firefighter
* Paramedic

All of the training you receive will be at the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Academy and will be free of charge.
